I never understood nor appreciated Summer’s character until I did. She’s complex. Although Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) seems perfect, he’s not perfect for her. When I first saw the movie I could not comprehend the idea of a love story being about unrequited love. And how could someone not love Tom? He’s essentially perfect: beautiful, funny, smart, kind, caring, beautiful. But that’s the very message of the story; one cannot help with whom he or she falls in love with.
